Sovětský tank T-72 se začal vyrábět v roce 1971; vyvíjen byl současně s typem T-64. Z typu T-72 byl později vyvinut tank T-90. Bylo jich vyrobeno okolo 20 tisíc a vyváženy byly do zemí Varšavské smlouvy, Finska, Jugoslávie, Indie a na Blízký východ. Vzniklo mnoho verzí, např. původní typy T-72 mají čelní pancíř silný 200 mm, zatímco typy T-72G a T-72M 350 až 400 mm.

The T-72 is a Soviet-designed main battle tank that entered production in 1970. It is developed directly from Obyekt-172, and shares parallel features with the T-64A.[4] The T-72 is one of the most widely produced post-World War II tanks, second only to the T-54/55 family, and the basic design has also been further developed as the T-90. The T-72 is the export model of the T-64/65.
